Starling Bank launches a “Connected card” to tackle COVID

Starling Bank has just announced the ‘Connected card’. This is a second card that customers can link to their existing accounts and give it to anyone they trust to pay for groceries and other essential items on their behalf.

This “spare debit card” was specifically designed to help personal account customers who are self-isolating during the coronavirus lockdown and are mostly relying on friends, neighbors and community volunteers to get their groceries for them.

The card is obviously protected by a PIN and with a balance limit of £200 and it only permits users to spend in-store and not online.

Above else, this new card removes the need for IOUs, cheques, bank transfers or handling cash.

Anne Boden, founder and CEO of Starling Bank says: “We know that getting in groceries and other essential items is a challenge for those who are self-isolating during the coronavirus emergency.”

“So we came up with a solution to help our customers pay for supplies bought for them by trusted friends and neighbors without the hassle of transferring money or handling cash.”

Starling account customers can apply for a Connected card on their Starling Bank app, and the card will be delivered to their registered address in five working days.

Starling also announced the Coronavirus Support Scheme which gives Starling customers who are struggling due to loss of income caused by the pandemic a three-month interest holiday on their overdraft.
